The Media Gallery at OAR Contemporary Art Museum presents two installation works by the renowned Korean artist duo Moon Kyungwon & Jeon Joonho: Phantom Garden III (2024) and To Build a Fire_This is Me (2024). Both works reimagine the history of the Earth—traditionally recorded from a human-centered perspective—through non-human viewpoints, reflecting on the climate crisis and environmental challenges faced by humanity.

Phantom Garden III envisions the Earth after human extinction, beginning with the speculative premise of a new life form tracing the remnants of humanity and the world of plants. The artists depict the process by which AI, like an archaeologist, investigates and reconstructs plant life after the disappearance of living beings, translating it into abstract moving images. Projected onto LED panels, the reconstructed genetic codes of plants and flowers evoke associations with fungal spores or cosmic star clusters.
To Build a Fire_This is Me symbolizes the passage of geological time through the metamorphosis of magma solidifying into rock and eventually weathering into stone. The title is borrowed from Jack London’s short story, though the work bears no relation to its narrative. Instead, it highlights the symbolism of fire—an elemental force that marked the dawn of human civilization and set humanity on a path distinct from nature. The work reflects on this pivotal moment as the origin of civilization.
Together, the two works use the symbols of plants and stones to question humanity’s place within nature and to open a field of ecological and civilizational reflection beyond anthropocentric narratives.

Moon Kyungwon & Jeon Joonho, who formed their artistic partnership in 2009, have long explored the fundamental relationship between art and society and the existential conditions of humanity. Their long-term project News from Nowhere was presented at documenta (2012) and the Korean Pavilion of the Venice Biennale (2015), earning them international recognition. They were awarded the Noon Art Prize at the Gwangju Biennale and the Artist of the Year prize from the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA). Their works have been exhibited widely at major institutions such as Tate Liverpool, Migros Museum of Contemporary Art (Switzerland), MMCA Hyundai Motor Series, Art Sonje Center, and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa.
